Dog Dream

Had the oddest dream last night.

We were having dinner with my mother. I don't remember that it was Thanksgiving. But it was good, as always. After the meal, entering the kitchen, I saw the carcass there, all carved up, with the head still hanging on, but not visible. "Must've been a goat", was my thought. "What was that animal, Mom?"

"Ohhh, you don't want to know," she said. But it was too late. As I turned the meat around there was the head of about the ugliest black dog I've ever laid eyes on. Another dog from the same litter was sitting beside the one that had just been eaten, only it was even uglier, just sitting stupidly. They were like hideous, flat-faced Cerberuses, with tiny ears and a short, pink tongue sticking out---not lolling, poking out as if it were too big for the dog's tiny mouth. No snout at all, utterly brachycephalic. Very dumb and ugly! I couldn't find a picture that could capture it.

I said, "That was one dumb looking dog."

To which Mom replied, "He won't be missed." Then as she was turning and cleaning the rest of the meat off the bones, I saw that it had been roasted without being gutted. It was hard not to wretch, but I didn't want to hurt Mom's feelings. She's really sensitive about her cooking.
